Canada is an independent federative state. It is one of the most developed countries.

It is situated on the North American continent. In size Canada is the second in the world after Russia. Its area is almost 10 million km2.

Canada is washed by the Pacific Ocean in the West, by the Atlantic Ocean in the East, and by the Arctic Ocean in the North.

Rivers Canada has three of 20 world’s largest rivers: -the St. Lawrence River, - the Mackenzie, - the Yukon.

Canada consists of 10 provinces and 3 territories.

Languages Official languages of Canada are English and French. Nearly 60 percent of the population speak English and 27 percent speak French.

Ottawa The capital of the country is Ottawa, but the largest city is Toronto.

Ottawa Ottawa is famous for its beautiful parks. It is also known as the city of bridges.

Montreal Other prominent cities are Montreal, Calgary, Quebec and Vancouver.

Niagara Falls Niagara Falls in Ontario is perhaps the first sight that people picture when thinking of Canada.

Canada is often called “the land of the maple leaf” because a maple leaf is the national symbol of the country. It became an emblem of Canada in Today the maple leaf appears on one cent coin. Red and white are Canada’s official colours. These colours are the symbolic elements shown in the Canadian flag. The National Flag of Canada, well-known as “the maple leaf”, is a red 11-pointed maple leaf in the centre on a white field. The beaver became the official emblem of Canada in 1975.

Canada is one of the largest and richest countries in the world with a very high living standard.
- The capital of the country is Ottawa. The state has two official languages: English and French.
- The average length of people’s life in Canada is 81 years.
- In 1965 the British Parliament adopted the national flag of Canada with maple leaf.
- The state of Canada was founded on the first of July, 1867.
- The national sport of Canada is hockey.
- The Canadian James Naitsmith invented a basketball game to give the Canadians a chance to play this game during winter time.
- Canadians are fond of eating cheese very much.

Canada’s coat of arms

Crown on the emblem symbolizes the Canadian constitutional monarchy, headed by a king or queen. The shield represents a country where income Canadians ancestors - England, Scotland, Ireland, France, and also it’s a symbol of a unified nation out of many peoples.

Native people – American Indians and Eskimos – make up about 2% of the country"s population. 77% of Canada"s people live in cites or towns.

Флора Северная часть Канады покрыта тундрой, которая проникает далеко к югу. Здесь растут вересковые, осоки, кустарниковые береза и ива. К югу от тундры раскинулась широкая полоса лесов. Преобладают хвойные леса; главные породы чёрная ель на востоке и белая ель на западе, сосна, лиственница, туя и др. Особенно разнообразны леса в районе Великих озёр (американский вяз, веймутова сосна, канадская цуга, дуб, каштан, бук). На тихоокеанском побережье распространены хвойные леса из дугласовой, ситхинской ели, аляскинского и красного кедра); около Ванкувера встречаются земляничное дерево и орегонский дуб. В приморских приатлантических провинциях акадские леса с бальзамической пихтой, чёрной и красной елью; также кедр, американская лиственница, жёлтая береза, бук.

Фауна В зоне тундр водятся северный олень, полярный заяц, песец и оригинальный мускусный овцебык. Южнее животный мир более разнообразен лесной олень карибу, благородный олень вапити, лось, в горных районах баран толсторог и снежная коза. Довольно многочисленны грызуны: канадская белка чикари, бурундук, американская летяга, бобр, прыгунчик из семейства тушканчиков, ондатра, дикобраз иглошерст, луговой и американский заяц, пищуха. Из кошачьих хищников для Канады канадская рысь и пума. Водятся волки, лисицы, серый медведь гризли, енот-полоскун. Из куньих соболь, пекан, выдра, росомаха и др. Много гнездящихся перелетных птиц и промысловой птицы. Фауна пресмыкающихся и земноводных небогата. В пресноводных водоемах много рыбы.

Государственно-политическое устройство Канада государство, входящее в Британское Содружество, и формально главой государства является английская королева. Официальным представителем королевы в Канаде является генерал-губернатор. Канада это парламентарная федеративная система с демократической традицией. Законодательная власть представлена Парламентом. Исполнительная власть осуществляется Правительством Её Величества Тайным советом. Верховным носителем исполнительной власти является королева. Судебная власть в стране принадлежит королеве и Королевским судам.

Население Канада относительно слабо заселена. Плотность населения (около 3,5 человек на 1 км²) является одной из самых низких в мире. Население Канады около 34 млн.человек. Наиболее населённая область страны это коридор Квебек-Виндзор вдоль равнинных берегов реки Св. Лаврентия и на юго-востоке Великих озёр. Основная масса населения - потомки переселенцев из Европы: англосаксы, франкоканадцы, немцы, итальянцы, украинцы, голландцы и т.д. Коренное население - индейцы и эскимосы - в ходе колонизации было оттеснено на север.

Крупные города Торонто - самый крупный город Канады, расположенный на пересечении водных и сухопутных путей. Население тыс. жителей. Города Торонто, Бремптон, Миссисога, Маркем и др. образуют агломерацию Большой Торонто (GTA) с населением 5715 тыс. В Торонто и окрестностях живет около 1/3 населения Канады. Монреаль - самый старый город в стране и самый крупный город в провинции Квебек с населением в 1,812,800 человек. В городе проживают в основном франко-канадцы, поэтому город называют "Французской Канадой" или "Парижем Северной Америки". Монреаль является промышленным центром страны, а также ее огромным транспортным узлом. Монреаль является крупным речным портом. Ванкувер расположен на юго-западе Канады, на границе с США. Население самого города чел. (2006 г.), но в Большом Ванкувере, если учитывать более 20 пригородов, проживает свыше 2 млн чел. Ванкувер - крупнейший порт на западном побережье Канады, являющийся одним из крупнейших деловых, и индустриальных центров мира.

Оттава Оттава столица Канады. Оттава четвёртый по величине город страны занимающий 6 место по уровню жизни в мире. Оттава расположена на берегах реки Оттава и на канале Ридо. Город основан в 1820-х годах. До 1855 г. он назывался Байтаун. С 1867 столица Канады. Население 875 тыс. жителей. Городское управление осуществляет муниципальный совет во главе с мэром. Для облика Оттавы характерны обилие воды и зелени, шахматная система улиц, связанная с развитой системой парковых дорог. Жилая застройка в основном двухэтажная.

Культура Многие элементы канадской культуры очень близки к культуре США, включая кино, телевидение, одежду, жилище, частный транспорт, потребительские товары и продукты питания. Несмотря на это, Канада обладает своей собственной уникальной культурой. В ознаменование того, что Канада заселена народами различного происхождения, в стране с 1960-х годов распространена политика многокультурности. В канадских городах можно найти элементы из культур всего мира; регулярно проводятся фестивали, посвящённые культурам разных стран.
